CPA Bound Partnerships

No other organization has been as impactful in increasing the number of Black CPAs as the National Association of Black Accountants. Over fifty years, NABA has become the largest representative of Black CPAs, and offers a wide array of training, networking, education, service, and recruiting programs which enhance the professional trajectories and personal fulfilment of members. For more than a decade, NABA’s CPA Bound program has helped reduce the barriers facing Blacks at each stage of the CPA pipeline, including educational attainment, placement in firms and accounting departments, CPA exam preparation, and certification.

CPA Bound helps increase the number and effectiveness of Black CPAs in five key programmatic areas:

  1. Preparation: Providing access to exam review training, CPA requirement information, study materials, and scholarship opportunities.
  2. Mentorship and Community: Connecting CPA candidates through a support network of study groups, webinars and mentoring in order to inspire, encourage, and address the pain points of studying for the exam.
  3. Financial Support: Providing resources such as scholarships for preparation courses, credit hour requirements, study materials, and exam reimbursement.
  4. Recognition: Celebrating new CPAs with awards and incentive opportunities.
  5. License Maintenance Support: Supporting current CPAs in maintaining their license by promoting CPE opportunities and leveraging relationships with organizations such as NASBA and the AICPA.

Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are among the most trusted professionals in the world, respected for enabling the transparency essential for planning, investment, reporting, regulatory compliance, and overall accountability. They occupy a unique place of assurance, creating an environment of certainty and predictability that makes markets operate, governments function, non-profits effective, and family budgets work. Outside of the workplace, CPAs play a vital role in their communities, fostering a bottom-line realism which creates a baseline upon which important initiatives can be launched, resources can be stewarded, and impact analyzed. Each CPA brings with them a lifetime of experiences, perspectives, and relationships which inform the collective standards, values, and outlook of the profession. Because of the central role as trust brokers, they play in commerce and society, diversity in the CPA ranks is crucial.

The contribution of Black CPAs to the profession is invaluable, yet the number of Black CPAs is almost inexplicably low. While Blacks make up nearly 9% of all U.S. accountants and auditors, they make up less than 1% of the more select group of CPAs. Not only are Black CPAs vital to the efficient and effective operation of large organizations but they also help empower minority businesses, help families improve their long-term financial stability, and volunteer with local community groups. The progress Blacks have made in other leadership roles must be matched in a profession so important to virtually all organizations and impactful in the lives of individuals.
